LeBron James, the star of the Lakers, has called for consequences for a Texas state trooper who was seen in a video aggressively confronting two Gamecocks players recently.
In the footage, four Gamecocks players can be seen leaving the tunnel to enter the field just as state troopers are arriving. One officer moved between the players and began shouting at them.
James reacted to this incident, stating, “That A&M cop should be suspended! That’s premeditated and really not cool! He went out of his way to start something. Do better.”
It’s unclear what exactly was said during the interaction. Did one of the players provoke the officer? Or did the officer overreact? The specifics are hard to determine.
According to an ESPN report, the officer has since been removed from the stadium.
The Texas Department of Public Safety acknowledged the situation, stating, “The DPS trooper involved was sent home from the game. Our Office of Inspector General is aware of the incident and will conduct a further investigation. No additional information will be released at this time.”
ESPN commentator Stephen A. Smith, who has had a complicated relationship with James, expressed his agreement with the NBA star’s take. “Exactly! I completely agree,” he shared on First Take. “The officer intentionally bumped into two players, particularly Nick Harbaugh. He approached Harbaugh in a confrontational way. The officer knew he was one of the players who just scored a touchdown. He should be suspended.”
This isn’t the first instance where LeBron James has criticized a police officer. In 2021, he stirred controversy by posting a photo of a white officer along with the caption, “You’re next,” although he later deleted that post.
Despite the tension from this incident, the game itself went on, with Texas A&M managing to come back and defeat South Carolina 31-30, maintaining their perfect record at 10-0.
