Is This the End for LeBron James?
NBA superstar LeBron James shared a video on his X profile over the weekend, which sparked speculation about his retirement.
In the clip, he addressed a comment that asked, “Are the retirement rumors true?” But before he could answer—there’s a nod to “The Sopranos”—the video abruptly cuts to black.
He reflected, “I’ve been asking myself the same question… #ad,” accompanied by some thoughtful and crown emojis.
James has a player option that could see him earning over $52 million with the Lakers next season, although it remains unclear if he will choose to opt in.
Following the Lakers’ elimination in the first round of the NBA playoffs by the Timberwolves, James expressed uncertainty about his future in basketball. He said, “I don’t know.” He mentioned needing to sit down with his family and support group to discuss what lies ahead.
“To be honest, I don’t have an answer right now,” he added. “So, I do know.”
Retirement whispers have been circulating around James for several years. He put those rumors to rest in 2023 when he confirmed his return to the Lakers, signing a two-year, $104 million deal. Previously, in 2022, he mentioned that he would like his final season in the NBA to be with his son, Bronnie.
“My last year will be played with my son,” he stated back in 2022. “I would do whatever it takes to play with my son for a year. It’s not about the money at that point.”
They actually played together last year, capturing attention as Bronnie was showcased in the second round of the NBA Draft before hitting the court for 27 games in the NBA.
It remains to be seen whether this father-son combination will share the floor again in the future.
