LeBron James Struggles to Adapt to Lakers’ Offense
As LeBron James works to integrate himself into the Los Angeles Lakers’ offensive strategy this season, it’s evident he’s not quite the same player he was two or even five years ago.
In recent games, James has put up 36 points against the Los Angeles Clippers and 23 against the Phoenix Suns, followed by 18 points against the Houston Rockets. Despite these individual performances, the Lakers suffered losses in both games, with James’s plus-minus numbers deteriorating along the way. In the game against Houston, the team lost 119-96, and James’s rating fell to minus-33.
Sam Mitchell, a former NBA player and coach, shared his thoughts on SiriusXM NBA Radio this week. He commented that, at nearly 41 years old, James may struggle to be the primary option, even for a team like the Washington Wizards, who are currently tied for the worst record in the league. “LeBron doesn’t seem to grasp that reality yet,” Mitchell noted. “You could switch teams, but you might still be the third choice.”
The Wizards, often compared to the Indiana Pacers in terms of performance, are in a rough spot in the league standings.
Lakers head coach JJ Redick expressed frustration over the team’s offensive execution, particularly after the loss to the Rockets. He pointed out that since bringing James back, the team’s organization on offense seems to have evaporated, leading to scattered plays. “We need to take a hard look at our defensive and offensive structure,” he remarked, acknowledging the recent inconsistencies.
The Lakers find themselves sitting at 19-10 so far this season, having lost six of their last ten games, raising questions about team dynamics and James’s fit within the offense. It’s a developing situation that fans will be keen to watch as the season progresses.
