The four-time NBA champion waved at the girl, who was wearing a Lakers No. 23 jersey, midway through the game and spent time with her on the court after Los Angeles' 117-108 win over Miami.
“A family friend sent me the video at halftime.” james saidshe said, referring to the moment when ESPN cameras captured her crying with her hand over her mouth. “And thank goodness I was actually looking at my phone at halftime, otherwise I wouldn't have even been able to see her reaction when I waved to her in the first half.” I waved and then went back to playing.
“I think it's really important to have a relationship with someone who responds in that way. And I've always been a role model and I've always tried to be a role model for my children, male or female, in any case. I try to be someone that people can look up to. I want them to be proud of me. I try to make them want to come see me play, or if they can't see me play, what I do off the floor inspires them. I hope it continues to give rations. But it was a very dope moment.”
James explained that the moment was made special because he also had daughters Zuri, 10, and wife Savannah.
“I have a little girl at home myself, so after the game I would always go to her and chop it up with her,” James said. “I gifted her one of my 'I Promise' bands and we took a picture together. I think it was also her sister, but I'm not sure, but it could have been her sister or a friend.
“I took a picture with them and I think it's something she'll never forget. I'm happy to be a part of her life now. That little moment was such a big moment. .”
James joked that he hoped the girl would be proud that he met her at school.
“She gained an edge over some of her classmates who may have said bad things about her in the past,” James said. “So they can't say anything right now.”
Wednesday's win against Miami ended Los Angeles' losing streak at three.
It was the Lakers' first win since two games were postponed due to the deadly wildfires in Southern California.
James had 22 points and nine assists.
The NBA's all-time leading scorer explained that he is suffering psychological damage from the Los Angeles fires as his family is evacuated from their home.
The Lakers host the Brooklyn Nets on Friday in Los Angeles.
