LeBron James’ next steps: What ‘The King’ should consider doing

LeBron James’ next steps: What 'The King' should consider doing

In Game 4 of the playoff series against the Oklahoma City Thunder, the Los Angeles Lakers, despite a late lead, couldn’t avoid a sweep by the defending champions. LeBron James took on a heavy load again, especially with Luka Doncic and Austin Reaves missing for parts of the series.

Now, the spotlight turns to LeBron’s future, especially considering he might have just played his last game at age 41.

During his post-game interview, James was understandably cautious, indicating he needed time to reflect on his next steps.

This offseason is expected to bring significant changes across the NBA, which could impact James as well. With Giannis Antetokounmpo potentially on the move, LeBron may find himself overshadowed in the headlines.

No one can be certain about what LeBron will choose. The prevailing theories suggest he might either stay with the Lakers, make a nostalgic return to the Cleveland Cavaliers for one final ride, team up with friends Stephen Curry and Steve Kerr on the Golden State Warriors, or even retire.

LeBron holds ultimate retirement tour in Cleveland

James deserves a farewell tour like none other in sports. Logically, it feels right for it to occur in Cleveland, especially as he and Luka Doncic vie for legacy moments. I’ve been saying this for a while, and sources like ESPN have hinted that the Cavs could welcome him back. Not only is it compelling, but LeBron could also bring valuable experience to a veteran Cavaliers team that could use a top wing player. It reminds me of Kareem Abdul-Jabbar’s rocking chair on his farewell tour—LeBron is sure to receive some memorable gifts. Honestly, Cleveland seems like a more favorable basketball situation compared to the Warriors or Lakers. I have a hunch he might play another season before hanging up his jersey, and Cleveland seems like the most sensible choice. — rod

LeBron enjoys ‘Bleacher Era’

I’ve noticed I’ve been scrolling through Instagram a lot lately, almost mindlessly.

My feed is a strange mix: a quarter of it is interstellar clips, another quarter is project hail mary clips, thanks to my daughter sharing dance competition videos in our family chat, and the rest is filled with high school baseball clips, courtesy of my son.

What occupies my thoughts right now is that last quarter.

With May approaching, high school baseball seasons are wrapping up. The state tournament is in full swing here in Maryland, leading to eliminations for various teams. This means some seniors are facing the end of their baseball journeys.

For parents, it marks the conclusion of the “bleach era”—those years spent cheering at games, supporting their kids, and sharing heartfelt moments after injuries.

And that time at the bleachers? Well, it’s something you won’t get back.

LeBron, you’ve achieved everything on the court. Your legacy is solid.

Now it’s time to relish the Bleacher Year.

You’ve earned it. — M.S.

LeBron deserves a retirement tour like we’ve never seen before

There will be ample time to dissect legacies and debate who stands as the greatest ever. In my view, LeBron ranks as the second greatest player of all time, right after Michael Jordan.

I can envision LeBron heading back to Cleveland, guiding the team to another championship, and riding into retirement as a celebrated figure in the NBA. But, honestly, I’m not entirely sure that will unfold. If he joins a robust Cavaliers roster that falters, the blame might rest on the challenges associated with his retirement tour. It’s also essential to remember that while he’s closely tied to the Cavaliers as a legend, LeBron has played for several teams throughout his career.

  1. LeBron James signs with the Cavaliers for the first 25 games. It’ll give him a hero’s farewell, while still focusing on winning.
  2. Next, he could be traded to the Miami Heat, reuniting with coach Erik Spoelstra, with whom he won two championships. This move could bolster the Heat’s playoff chances before he departs.
  3. After his farewell tour, LeBron might return to the Lakers. This scenario aligns with his ambition to remain a key figure in Los Angeles while supporting the Lakers in crucial moments.

It all feels unusual, yet fitting, as we watch the end of King James’s era. — James Deiter

LeBron James and the holy land of basketball

As someone who has grown up supporting Cleveland teams (a nod to my Cleveland Browns site), I genuinely think LeBron’s return is the most sensible and compelling narrative. I expect him to come back, as there are whispers about when this could happen—certainly a fantastic story.

Deiter’s idea certainly caught me off guard creatively; I thought I had a unique perspective.

LeBron has consistently lauded Madison Square Garden, so a farewell tour in New York makes considerable sense. If the Knicks fell short in the Eastern Conference Finals, they might be eager to secure that one last crucial player. Imagine the Knicks winning the NBA Championship in 2027 while hosting LeBron’s farewell tour—he would be celebrated as a hero for four different teams, all while basking in the glow of a major market.
