Pat Riley is the real guy behind the Cookie Monster costume.
Dwyane Wade spoke about the wild story about the Underground Lounge podcast of former Heat teammate LeBron James throwing a fit on Pat Riley, who is stolen cookies on a team plane.
It was the moment when Wade paused about James' future in Miami.
“This was the first moment I had an inkling that LeBron might not come back,” Wade said. “One thing you don't do is F-K with LeBron cookies. This is serious. Likewise, he loves chocolate chip cookies. Chocolate chip cookies and ice cream, he loves it.
“So when he gets on the plane, LeBron walks on the plane with two bags of food. One bag is all cookies [other] The bag is what his chef prepares for him to eat, as he eats in a certain way. He doesn't eat what's on the plane… so we're on the plane, playing cards in front of the plane, and at some point LeBron would be like, “Hey, bring me those cookies.” One day he said, “Hey, where are my cookies?” And one day they had to get up and whisper in their ears, telling him that there were no more cookies on the plane. ”
That's when things get turned into order.
“That motherf left the game. He pushed the card back at them and he sat there quietly, his head like this [nodding]. He didn't play cards anymore. That's serious. It was just too much micromanagement at that point,” Wade said. “You're talking about a team that's been in succession in the four finals. You don't need to micromanage us. “Riles” felt a little too far from his micromanagement in that respect. He is a grown man. You will not take away the cookies from him. ”
James announced his intention to take part in the infamous “decision” aired on ESPN on July 8, 2010, declaring that he was stealing “talents to South Beach.”
The Heat with James, Wade and Chris Bosch went to the NBA Finals for the fourth consecutive time since 2011-2014, winning everything in '12 and '13.
In 2014, James chose to return to Cleveland. The decision decided to resist from Riley, who stopped calling for Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert, who called the NBA star “Benedict Arnold” when he left the franchise a few years ago.
James won another title in Cleveland in 2016 and added fourth to the Lakers in 2020, but the Heat couldn't get over the hump.
At the 2025 NBA trade deadline, star Jimmy Butler was forced to trade from Miami, and at his final meeting with Butler, Riley reportedly shed tears after trying to persuade the sixth NBA All-star to keep the heat.
When picking up coffee at his Miami shop, Butler set an example for one of his employees.
“I gave you a compliment, and that's what the boss does,” he said with a smile. “We build you up, we won't break you.”
Butler is then traded for the Warriors, and Golden State looks rejuvenated as he has a 6-1 record since the deal.
