On Monday, the United States Olympic and Paralympic Committee announced that James received the most votes to serve as the U.S. team’s flag bearer during the Olympics.
He said female athletes have also been selected and the results of the vote will be announced later on Tuesday.
“It’s an incredible honor to represent the United States on this global stage, especially at this moment that brings the whole world together,” James said.
“As a kid from Akron, this responsibility means everything not only to me, but to my family, local kids, teammates, fellow Olympians and so many people across the country who have big aspirations,” he added. “Sports has the power to bring us all together and I’m proud to be a part of this important moment.”
James was a member of the U.S. Olympic team in Greece in 2004, co-captained the 2008 Redeem Team and last competed in the Olympics at the 2012 London Games.
James also leads Team USA in career assists, has won four NBA championships, four league MVP awards and is the most-time All-Star appearance of all time (20).
The Olympic opening ceremony begins in Paris on Friday at 7:30 p.m. NBC.
The delegation will board a barge and travel down the Seine, exiting at the foot of the Eiffel Tower.
