LeBron James announced on Monday that he wouldn’t be attending the Met Gala, even though he was one of the honorary co-chairs for the event in New York City. The Los Angeles Lakers player mentioned that he was dealing with injuries following his team’s first-round playoff exit against the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In a message shared on X, he expressed disappointment, stating, “Unfortunately, a knee injury left me unable to attend the Met Gala in New York tonight at the end of the season.” He added, “I hate to miss out on historical events! My beautiful, powerful queen holds down the castle like she has always done!”
According to reports, James suffered a ligament injury during Game 5. If the Lakers had managed to go further in the playoffs, he could have been sidelined for a few weeks.
Colman Domingo, Lewis Hamilton, A$AP Rocky, Pharrell Williams, and Anna Wintour also served as co-chairs for the event.
This year’s Met Gala theme drew inspiration from the annual Spring Exhibition, based on Monica L. Miller’s book, Slaves to Fashion: Black Dandyism and the Styling of Black Diasporic Identity. The exhibition, titled Superfine: Tailing Black Style, features a variety of sections that explore dandy style, as articulated by Zora Neale Hurston in her 1934 essay, “Characteristics of Black Expression.”
Interestingly, the gala managed to raise a staggering $31 million, as noted by Max Hollane, the CEO of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
