Legacy Green Group Allegedly Cuts More Jobs as Trump Embraces Climate Agenda

Sierra Club Initiates Second Round of Layoffs This Year

Sierra Club, a prominent environmental nonprofit, is reportedly reducing its workforce for the second time this year, with around 30 employees set to be laid off. This move seems to align with a broader trend among major environmental groups, as others like Rocky Mountain Institute and Ocean Conservancy have also announced cuts this year. It reflects a significant shift in climate action strategies, especially following changes in administration and policy priorities.

Dirampramer, the president of the Sierra Club’s unit within the Progressive Trade Union, expressed confusion over the organization’s decision. “It’s hard to comprehend why the leadership would again turn its back on those who work diligently every day to address these challenges,” he stated. This sentiment highlights a growing frustration within the community regarding leadership decisions during an era of shifting environmental policies.

Founded in 1892, the Sierra Club has been a pivotal player in environmental advocacy. It touts achievements such as the closure of 382 coal plants over its history as significant victories. The organization’s core values emphasize principles like justice, collaboration, and anti-racism. Recently, it condemned past racist remarks made by co-founders, illustrating a commitment to evolving its stance in response to societal changes. In May 2024, it took action against major fossil fuel projects, including a lawsuit aimed at halting liquefied natural gas terminals.

The current landscape is marked by President Donald Trump declaring an Energy Emergency shortly after taking office, intending to boost domestic energy production amid rising demand. This contrasts with the Biden administration’s focus, which tends to favor green energy initiatives, often at odds with traditional energy production methods.

Under Biden, significant funding was directed toward green energy projects, while the Trump administration criticized environmental groups for obstructing energy development. Recently, the EPA announced plans for substantial deregulation, aiming to reverse various regulations put in place during the previous administrations. This sweeping change indicates a divergent approach to energy policy between the two administrations.

The Sierra Club has yet to provide any comments in response to inquiries about these developments.
