The Senate has approved a bill to strengthen U.S. Secret Service protection for major party presidential candidates, just weeks after former President Donald Trump was the target of a second assassination attempt.

“This bill will be sent to the President. [Joe] “It's on Biden's desk now, and I hope he will sign it into law soon,” said Sen. Rick Scott (R-Fla.). “In just 65 days, two psychopaths have attempted to assassinate President Donald Trump, one of whom shot him in the head,” Sen. Scott wrote when introducing the bill.
The bill will be sent to President Joe Biden for his signature, days after it unanimously passed the House of Representatives. The increased security will not only apply to President Trump and 2024 Democratic nominee Vice President Kamala Harris, but will also benefit future “major” party candidates.
“I don't think there's anything meaningful that would change the way the Secret Service does its job,” said Sen. Chris Murphy, D-Conn.
Murphy called for a “more comprehensive” discussion about security protocols for U.S. politicians. He ultimately did not oppose passing the bill, but still called on Republicans to accept increased funding for the U.S. Secret Service through a “government budget patch.”
The bill would require the Secret Service to provide regular reports to Senate and House leaders on the status of protection for candidates.
In a presidential election year, the periodic reporting would require the bureau to submit a report on candidate protections every 15 days.
These reports include threat levels, security protocols, costs, staffing levels, unmet needs and more.
The threat level of each presidential candidate, the security measures in place, associated expenses, the number of employees stationed in each security unit, and any security requirements that are not being met will all be outlined in the report.
