Lemon stands firm, challenges Trump's DOJ to 'turn me into the next Jimmy Kimmel'

Don Lemon delivered a bold statement on Thursday night as the Justice Department moved forward with potential charges against him for streaming a protest involving left-wing activists at a Minnesota church. He was anticipated to face indictment following a warning from Attorney General Pam Bondi that “no one is above the law” in light of a protest against ICE at St. Paul Cities Church. However, earlier that day, a federal judge dismissed the Justice Department’s initial attempt to prosecute Lemon.

On his YouTube show, Lemon expressed, “I stand proud, and I stand tall. This isn’t a victory lap for me—because it’s not over yet. They’ll try again, so guess what? I’m here. Keep trying.” He further asserted, “This isn’t going to stop me from being a journalist. It’s not going to diminish my voice. You can call me the new Jimmy Kimmel if you want, but just try it! You’re not going anywhere.”

He added that the situation isn’t about justice but rather about power and alleged incompetence. “None of this is about justice. This is about power,” he insisted.

In response to Lemon’s remarks, Harmeet Dhillon from the Justice Department seemed to acknowledge Lemon’s criticism. Lemon expressed surprise at Bondi’s anger towards those enforcing the law, questioning her motivations. “Why be upset unless you’re using it as a weapon rather than seeking truth and justice?” he asked.

Lemon maintained that he approached Cities Church as a reporter, emphasizing the importance of protest as a First Amendment right. The unrest stemmed from suspicions regarding the pastor’s alleged collaboration with ICE. While Lemon has yet to be charged, others have faced legal action in relation to the protests, and there are reports that the Justice Department might pursue different avenues against him.

His attorney, Abby Rowell, stated that the recent judicial actions affirm Lemon’s rights as a reporter. “If they continue their troubling efforts to silence him, Don will fight any charges vigorously,” she remarked.

Although Lemon claims he had no prior knowledge of the protest plans, footage he posted indicates otherwise. He entered the church before the activists and referred to the incident as a “secret mission.” Lemon contended that disruption and making people uncomfortable is part of what America stands for.

Two protest organizers have been charged with conspiracy for violating rights. In the larger context, Lemon’s situation brings up questions about the balance between protest and journalistic integrity.
