Letitia James Challenges Court Decision that Dismissed Trump Penalty

Letitia James Appeals Court Ruling on Trump Fraud Case

New York Attorney General Letitia James has filed an appeal regarding a court decision that significantly reduced the penalties against President Trump and his business related to her civil fraud case.

Her office submitted a Notice of Appeal, indicating their choice to contest a mid-level appellate court’s ruling that overturned approximately $500 million in fines initially imposed. This decision came amid a complex ruling from a state appellate judge last month, which sided with a lower court’s finding that Trump and others, including his eldest son, manipulated his net worth for financial advantages.

Despite the mid-level court’s decision, it affirmed the hefty financial penalty earlier set, noted at about $527 million by Judge Arthur Engoron.

A spokesperson for Trump’s legal team described the Attorney General’s actions as a “political crusade” against him. They asserted that James’s focus should be redirected to addressing her responsibilities rather than pursuing such contentious actions. The spokesperson likened the situation to a misuse of New York taxpayers’ funds.
