Letitia James Faces Complaint to the Bar

Complaint Filed Against New York Attorney General Letitia James

A conservative watchdog group has lodged a formal complaint against New York State Attorney General Letitia James, alleging professional misconduct. This complaint is connected to a mortgage case in Norfolk, Virginia, which had previously resulted in federal charges being dismissed.

The Center for the Advancement of American Security (CASA) submitted the complaint to the state Judicial Complaints Commission, claiming that James engaged in “unlawful and dishonest conduct” regarding a mortgage she took out on a property that she reportedly claimed as her primary residence. The group’s assertion highlights potential violations of the ethical standards outlined in New York’s Rules of Professional Conduct.

“Fraud, misrepresentation, honesty, and trustworthiness are all factors that the Rules of Professional Conduct explicitly consider when evaluating whether a lawyer should face discipline,” noted Curtis Schube, the director of research and policy for CASA, in the complaint.

Previously, Letitia James faced charges for allegedly forging mortgage documents. The indictment detailed accusations that she falsified these documents to obtain a $109,600 loan related to the Norfolk property, which also housed a grandniece with a criminal background.

The prosecutors argued that the fraudulent terms of the loan allowed her to gain nearly $19,000 in additional profits throughout the mortgage’s duration. Moreover, James’ disclosures from 2020 to 2023 classified the Norfolk property as an “investment,” reporting its value between $100,000 and less than $150,000, with earnings ranging from $1,000 to $5,000.
