At a recent rally in Harlem hosted by the National Action Network, New York Attorney General Letitia James delivered a passionate speech that quickly escalated in intensity, aiming her criticism at the Trump administration. It seems you might have wanted to cover your ears.
James expressed strong disapproval of the Trump administration’s initiatives to tackle waste, fraud, and abuse within the Department of Health and Human Services. She specifically mentioned the detrimental effects these efforts could have on critical programs like Head Start and Meals on Wheels, along with healthcare services for 9/11 first responders.
“And you think I’m just going to sit by and ignore this madness?” she exclaimed, punctuating her points with an animated gesture.
Determined to take action, James announced her plans to sue the federal government, including HHS Secretary Robert Kennedy Jr. She described him with a rather unusual comment about “insects on his head,” and noted that other Democratic state attorneys general would likely join her in this legal fight.
“You chose me to continue the fight, and I will fight!”
While James didn’t provide specifics about the lawsuit, sources suggested it would potentially name several other AGs. Fox News Host Aisha Hasney expressed uncertainty about who else might get involved, given the swirling allegations surrounding James.
Allegations have emerged from the Federal Housing Finance Agency regarding James, claiming instances of mortgage fraud. According to William Plute, the FHFA director:
- In August 2023, James claimed she would construct a home in Norfolk, Virginia, labeling it her “primary residence,” even though she didn’t live there full-time, which contradicts New York state residency requirements.
- She misrepresented the number of units in a Brooklyn property to secure loans from Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac.
- In 1983, when purchasing property, she referred to her father as her husband to obtain a better mortgage rate. Documentation from May 2000 also listed her as “husband and wife,” leading to confusion about her father’s inclusion.
Plute has called for a criminal investigation by the Department of Justice to examine possible wire, mail, and bank fraud, along with false statements made to financial institutions. James has labeled these allegations as “unfounded.”
Still, James remained fervent during her speech at the National Action Network event, responding to these claims, “You can come after me if you wish.”
“But you chose me to stand firm! You chose me to uphold the law! You chose me to fight against this administration,” she declared passionately.
Others in attendance, including race activist Al Sharpton—who supports James in the forthcoming New York mayoral election—and Adrian Adams, chair of the New York Council, were visibly moved as her speech reached its emotional peak.
“You chose me to rise up for the children of God. You chose me. You chose me,” she passionately reiterated.
A clip of her impassioned address is available for viewing online, where it has been described as “fiery” by observers. Reports suggest that James’ presentation was quite impactful.
The White House and HHS did not respond to requests for comment.
