Illinois University Moves Classes Online Due to ICE Presence

Lewis University in Illinois has decided to transition some classes to an online format after discovering that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is operating in the same building as one of its campuses.

The university mentioned that it received information about the U.S. General Services Administration (GSA) leasing office space at the Oak Brook location, specifically at 1111 W. 22nd Street, for ICE’s administrative offices. This announcement was made through a statement issued on Sunday.

In their statement, the university clarified that “Lewis is one of multiple tenants” in the building and does not have the authority to dictate rental agreements for other entities. They emphasized the need to maintain a safe and productive learning environment, particularly in light of social media discussions around potential protests and local community concerns regarding ICE.

Class Adjustments and Student Support

All in-person classes at the Oak Brook campus will be shifted online from February 16 to February 21, to the extent feasible. The university expressed that this is part of several measures being taken to ensure that instruction continues while prioritizing the safety of students, faculty, and staff. They are in ongoing communication with facility management and will keep everyone updated as new information arises.

Students are encouraged to utilize resources like the Lewis University Health and Counseling Services Center or the telemedicine service, TimelyCare, which is available 24/7 for any additional support they might need.

Recent Tensions and Safety Concerns

Concerns surrounding ICE have intensified, especially following the fatal shooting of Renee Nicole Good by an ICE officer on January 7. Good was allegedly involved in an incident where she tried to drive her vehicle into a police officer who had approached her. Protests have escalated since the shooting of another individual, Alex Preti, on January 24.

In January, ICE reported alarming increases in violence, with assaults rising over 1,300%, vehicle attacks on officers skyrocketing by 3,200%, and death threats spiking by 8,000%.

A spokesperson for Lewis University informed that they have no further comments at this time and will provide updates regarding the situation at Oak Brook after February 21.
