Lewiston Council Member Resigns Amid Legal Troubles
A man from Somalia, recently elected to the Lewiston City Council in Maine, has stepped down just days after assuming office. This resignation follows felony accusations and an inquiry concerning his residency in the district he represented, as reported by local news.
Iman Osman, the former council member, expressed in her resignation letter to Mayor Carl Sherin and City Council President David Chittim that this decision was not made lightly. She noted that she believes stepping aside is in the best interest of the community. “I hope my resignation serves as a call to action for those I leave behind and an opportunity to reflect on the values of respect, inclusion, and kindness that guide our public service,” she stated.
Osman’s departure comes in response to a grand jury indictment on charges of stealing two firearms, with incidents reported between mid-November 2023 and October 2024.
At her arraignment, Osman pleaded not guilty in the Lewiston District Court. Furthermore, reports indicate she is under scrutiny regarding her residency, as her address has been listed as condemned since October 2024.
Recently, the Lewiston City Council voted 6-1 to investigate Osman’s place of residence, with Osman being the sole dissenting vote.
In her resignation letter, Osman alleged that during her campaign and time in office, she faced what she termed “racist opposition” and experienced “vicious personal attacks.”
Osman’s attorney, Keenan Majerus Collins, spoke to WMTW, suggesting that the national discourse surrounding the Somali community has contributed to the backlash faced by Osman. “The fact that the Trump administration is targeting Somalis and Somali-Americans across the country has helped fuel the kind of hatred and threats of violence that ultimately led to the conclusion that they are unable to hold public office at this time,” he remarked.
