Philz Coffee to Remove Pride Flags, Sparking Backlash

A San Francisco coffee chain, Philz Coffee, is facing criticism after announcing it would remove LGBTQ+ pride flags from its locations. The brand, which began in 2016 with just one outlet and has since grown to 60 stores in California and Chicago, has been known for its visible support for LGBTQ+ issues.

On Wednesday, Philz stated that the removal of pride flags and other decorations is intended to foster a “more consistent and inclusive experience” across all stores. Mahesh Sadarangani, CEO, emphasized that their commitment to the LGBTQIA+ community hasn’t changed, insisting, “This is a change in the look of our stores, not who we are.”

Sadarangani elaborated, pointing out that true allyship is reflected in the company’s hiring practices and overall treatment of employees, as well as in their annual Pride Month celebrations. He underscored the importance of unity within their operations.

However, the response from LGBTQ+ activists has been overwhelmingly negative. One activist remarked on the potential fallout, stating that “gays won’t support it,” vowing to boycott if changes were made. Anne Harrison, a professor at Berkeley, expressed concern that the pride flag is integral to the brand’s identity, highlighting its symbolic nature in promoting inclusivity.

Customer Todd Barney called the decision “pretty rotten,” suggesting it might have been influenced by corporate pressures. Meanwhile, SF Pride’s executive director, Suzanne Ford, voiced frustration about the decision, noting that removing the pride flag feels like a step backward for the community. She articulated the anxiety many queer individuals feel in today’s climate, mentioning that such gestures, though they might seem small, carry significant weight.

Additionally, there are reports of a petition on Change.org, highlighting that staff and customers feel less supported by Philz. The petition emphasizes that pride flags represent safe spaces for all individuals, regardless of their identity.

Since the acquisition of Philz by Freeman Spogli & Company in 2021, the direction of the brand has come into question, especially as the firm also invests in other major food chains. As of now, the timeline for when the flags will be removed remains uncertain.
