Liberal group indicates they think Harris is pretending to moderate her immigration views before election

Liberal immigration groups have criticized Harris for her recent adoption of tougher border policies but still support her, saying they believe her new stance is just a pretense, Axios reported Wednesday.

Kelly Talbott, executive director of the Immigration Hub, told Axios that she disagrees with Harris' current stance on border policy, calling the Harris campaign's proposal essentially a “Republican bill,” but added that she still supports Harris.

“We all know and trust that Ms. Harris will make the right decisions while in office, and this bill will never be brought up again if it continues as is,” Talbott told the outlet.

Other liberal immigration groups have also said they oppose Harris' new immigration policies but still support her campaign.

Gina Cummings of Oxfam America argued that Harris' immigration policies “should never be brought before or passed by the Senate under this or any future administration.”

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) told Axios that Harris' bill “contains some of the same tried and tested policies that will make the situation on the southern border worse.”

Still, Padilla added, Harris “is the only candidate in this race who is committed to keeping families together and providing a path to citizenship for long-time immigrants, and I'm proud to endorse her.”

The Harris campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Fox News Digital.

The southern border and the economy remain the two biggest issues for voters, and they are also the two issues on which voters consistently say former President Trump would do a better job than Harris.

Republicans have slammed Harris for her role as “border secretary,” a moniker she received in 2021 when Biden tasked her with stemming the flow of illegal immigration by addressing its “root causes.”

Rep. James Comer (R-Ky.), chairman of the House Oversight Committee, is now pressing the Biden administration to provide documents about communications Harris' office has had with the Border Patrol.

“It is important that the Committee and the American people understand Vice President Harris' role as Border Secretary during the ongoing border crisis,” Comer said in the letter, obtained by Fox News Digital.

“Massive illegal immigration and release Illegal immigration “The influx of illegal immigration into the United States under the Biden-Harris Administration has contributed to the murder, sexual assault, and serious injury of many Americans at the hands of illegal immigrants. These crimes should never have happened,” the letter continued.
