Liberal paper alters quote, distorting Republican candidate’s abortion stance and upending House race

First appearance on Fox: A California liberal newspaper was forced to correct itself this week after it published false quotes by a Republican candidate that effectively distorted his stance on abortion and was used as a fundraising tool by incumbent Democrats vying for office. Ta.

It took the Sacramento Bee more than three weeks to correct the candidate survey it published on February 5th. In it, he quoted Kevin Lincoln, the Republican candidate and mayor of Stockton, Calif., as saying he was “anti-abortion,” when in reality he said: He claims to be “pro-life” with exceptions for “rape, incest, and the mother’s health.”

“What do you think about abortion rights? What, if anything, would you like Congress to do now?” the paper asked in a survey.

“I support the Supreme Court returning powers to the states that have jurisdiction. California is a pro-choice state. I oppose pro-life and support exceptions such as rape, incest, and maternal health.” “I have no intention of going to Congress to support a federal abortion ban,” Lincoln wrote in his first response.

The Sacramento Bee published a correction to the article on February 27, claiming that the article had been “edited to comply with Associated Press guidelines on abortion,” and that the modifier was “anti-abortion or anti-abortion.” It provides for the use of the modifier “anti-abortion or anti-abortion rights” instead of “rights”. “Pro-life, pro-choice, or pro-abortion” unless used as a proper noun or as a quotation, as in the case of Lincoln.

Before the section was corrected, incumbent Democratic Congressman Josh Harder’s campaign used the false quote to send out a fundraising email slamming Lincoln’s stance on abortion. “He goes on record saying, ‘I’m anti-abortion,’ and it’s almost like he’s proud of it!” Harder wrote in an email, with exceptions that Lincoln cited in his response. I didn’t mention it.

Tougher campaign fundraising emails

Before the portion was corrected, incumbent Democratic Congressman Josh Harder’s campaign used the false quote to send out a fundraising email slamming Lincoln’s stance on abortion. (Congressman Josh Harder)

It is unclear whether Mr. Harder knew whether the quote was false at the time the email was sent, and neither his campaign nor the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee responded to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.

The email prompted not only Mr. Lincoln’s campaign but also the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) to accuse Mr. Harder of intentionally using false quotes, and his campaign, in conjunction with the Sacramento Bee, accused Mr. Harder of intentionally using false quotes. It seems to suggest that there is.

“Josh Harder’s use of a deliberately edited quote that mischaracterizes Mayor Kevin Lincoln’s position in a critical election campaign casts a long shadow,” said Hector Barajas, a spokesman for the Lincoln campaign. Mr. Harder must immediately correct his false fundraising solicitations and stop lying about Mayor Lincoln’s position.” he told FOX News Digital.

NRCC spokesperson Ben Petersen echoed Barajas’ remarks, telling Fox News Digital, “Nobody is as despicable and selfish as Josh Harder would stoop to, and armed with false estimates.” “This is just the latest example. Harder will be held accountable for lying to Central Valley families.” . ”

The Sacramento Bee, Harder’s campaign, and the Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee did not respond to Fox News Digital’s requests for comment.

In addition to Harder and Lincoln, Republicans Khalid Jeffrey Jafri and John McBride are also joining the race. Under California’s jungle primary system, the two candidates who receive the most votes on primary day, regardless of party, advance to the November general election.

Election analysts rate the race as either “likely” or “certain” for the Democratic Party.
