Democrats Facing Major Voter Losses, Say “Pod Save America” Hosts
In a recent episode of the podcast “Pod Save America,” co-hosts John Favreau and Dan Pfeiffer discussed the troubling state of the Democratic Party, highlighting significant voter losses since the 2020 election. They indicated that this period could be one of the most challenging in the party’s history, with Pfeiffer stating, “I mean, it’s at a worse point than almost every point in our history,” and comparing it to losses experienced in the 1984 election.
Favreau kicked off the discussion by referencing recent registration data that reveals the party has lost more than 2 million voters since the previous election cycle. He pointed to a comprehensive analysis by Shane Goldmacher, which indicated that across 30 states, Democrats have seen a decline of around 2.1 million voters from 2020 to 2024, while Republicans gained approximately 2.4 million.
The hosts elaborated on how the numbers for Democrats have continued to drop even after the last election day. Favreau noted, “Currently there are 160,000 fewer Democrats compared to Election Day 2024, while the Republican numbers have increased by 200,000.”
Pfeiffer, taking his turn, raised the possibility that the situation could be even more dire than the statistics suggest. “It might actually be worse, I’m going to say,” he remarked, underscoring the party’s continued struggles. He further elaborated that in key battleground states, the Democrats are losing their advantage. For instance, he mentioned that the registration lead in North Carolina has shrunk from 400,000 to just 17,000 since the last election.
Pfeiffer concluded the discussion by asserting, “This is the party of crisis.” He pointed out that approval ratings are stagnating, trust in leadership is waning, and many Democratic voters are calling for a change in leadership as the party grapples with the ramifications of this ongoing crisis.
