Liberal Supreme Court Justice Elena Kagan denies appeal from Mexican family seeking asylum from cartel violence

Families who claim to be facing violence from drug cartels are likely I’ll be deported Supreme Court judge Elena Kagan went to Mexico after rejecting a request for an emergency appeal to block deportation proceedings.

Liberal Justice denied a request for appeal to the ruling from the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals and did not refer the case to a wider court. She did not comment on the verdict.

When they sought asylum, the immigration judge denied the claim, and the decision was later upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

The family claimed in their submission that they were “targets of cartel violence because they refused to comply with family ties and fearful tor demands.”

Families seeking asylum were identified as Fabian Lagunus Espinoza, Maria Angelica Flores Ulloa, Fabian Lagunus Flores and Mateo Lagunus Flores. They had sought an emergency appeal to block deportation proceedings so that their asylum claims would be properly considered.

The family allegedly fled the violence in Mexico in August 2021 after “armed cartel members threatened their families at gunpoint, demanding that they be left home or killed within 24 hours.”

When they sought asylum, the immigration judge denied the claim, and the decision was later upheld by the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.

President Donald Trump has pledged to implement the largest massive deportation effort in US history during the 2024 presidential election, but the deficits and procedural obstacles maintain a lower number of deportations than officials prefer.

The family is scheduled to meet with immigration officers on Thursday, and Newsweek reported that it is unknown what happened at the meeting.
