Libertarian tech leader invests $40M to oppose socialist Democrats

Josh Shapiro urges a discussion within the Democratic Party about its future path

The Democratic Socialist Movement’s Progression

Tiffany Smiley, founder of Endeavor PAC, expresses concerns that the Democratic Party may already be too late in addressing the growing influence of the far-left. She argues that the party has increasingly accommodated radical ideologies over the past year, with candidates backed by the Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) winning numerous elections. Smiley suggests that the Democratic Party has strayed away from its core values, making it challenging to regain its footing.

A wealthy tech investor, Scott Banister, is stepping in with $40 million to help Republicans combat the influence of the Democratic Socialists at the state level. Known for his early investments in companies like PayPal, Uber, and SpaceX, Banister’s significant contribution went to Make Liberty Win, a conservative organization. This funding has already been initiated in nine states, including Wisconsin, Michigan, and Georgia, with plans to extend efforts to at least a dozen more.

Recent communications highlight that self-identified socialists are gaining traction within the Democratic Party, citing instances like the election of New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani. Make Liberty Win intends to counter this by mobilizing youth and student activists to engage with over two million voters in critical states.

Banister’s financial support comes at a crucial moment for the GOP. While Republicans currently have a favorable position nationally, the Republican State Leadership Committee has pointed out that Democrats are expected to outspend Republicans at the state level three to one. The financial backing from Make Liberty Win could help level the playing field against the Democrats’ monetary advantage.

There’s been a history of Democrats disputing claims regarding funding disparities, so the political landscape remains quite dynamic. Make Liberty Win, which aligns itself with libertarian principles, operates by focusing on grassroots efforts—think door-to-door campaigning and phone banking—rather than directly donating to candidates.

The $40 million investment is notably substantial for state-level political campaigns. For a bit of context, the average cost for a candidate running for a U.S. House seat was around $1.8 million for the 2024 campaign cycle. For state races, this funding is even more impactful.

This amount serves as merely a starting point for what Make Liberty Win might spend, as Banister and other potential supporters could choose to contribute more in the future. The organization’s CEO, Jeff Frazee, emphasizes a comprehensive approach aimed at defeating socialist candidates and securing victories at the state level, where the foundations of political movements often take root.
