Natasha Cloud has witnessed nearly every WNBA preseason game this season, but she missed her dream 80-70 win with the Mystics on Wednesday, as she was at practice instead.
With each game she watches, her anticipation grows—she’s eager to finally play freely.
“I’m itching to get out there,” Cloud admitted.
Yet, she and her Liberty teammates will need to wait a few more days for their chance.
The Liberty is slated to start their two-game preseason series against the Connecticut Sun at Barclays Center on Friday.
Breanna Stewart is unlikely to participate in the opener as he is still ramping up his training, but he should make his preseason debut on Monday night against the Toyota Antelope in Eugene, Oregon.
Interestingly, Liberty is the only WNBA team yet to compete in a preseason game.
Coach Sandy Brondello explained that the delayed start wasn’t a strategic choice but rather a scheduling issue with Barclays Center.
“Sometimes it’s out of our control,” Brondello said. “This is the first home game we could schedule due to arena availability. Ideally, we’d have wanted to play by now, but it’s what it is.”
Liberty has made efforts to replicate 5-on-5 gameplay during practice but acknowledged that it doesn’t quite match the experience of an actual game against an opponent.
Jonquel Jones expressed her belief that more practice can be beneficial, especially for new players and those vying for final roster spots.
“It gives players the chance to prove themselves as they aim for a position on the team,” Jones noted.
Cloud highlighted the importance of player health, suggesting that other teams should reconsider the timing of preseason games.
“I really can’t believe we’re having a preseason game just a week into training camp,” Cloud remarked. “It feels reckless for our bodies. I’d voice my concerns to the team that set this schedule. It feels like we need at least a week and a half to prepare for preseason. I’m not sure if that means starting earlier or adding more prep time. We’re adding games, but not extending the overall schedule.”
Liberty is gearing up for their title defense against the Las Vegas Aces at Barclays Center on May 17th.
