In Vitro Fertilization and Christian Perspectives
In vitro fertilization (IVF) is becoming increasingly popular, particularly as cases of infertility rise. This brings about an important question for many Christians: how do they reconcile their beliefs with the use of IVF? Can they engage with this medical process without straying from their Christian ethical guidelines?
To delve into this discussion, Ally Beth Stucky invited Lila Rose for an open conversation on the matter.
Ally noted that plenty of Christians who support IVF argue, “Even though scientists and doctors connect sperm to embryos, it’s ultimately God who brings forth life.”
Lila responded, “I have definitely heard that perspective. It’s true, these are indeed precious humans created in God’s image. But I think we must consider: just because God causes life, doesn’t mean He condones every method of creation.”
She illustrated her point with the example of rape, stating that while a child born from such a terrible act is still a representation of God’s image and should be treasured, the circumstances surrounding their conception are unequivocally condemned.
Lila further explained, “In both cases—whether it’s from rape or IVF—the creation of life wasn’t a moral act. So, the way life comes into being can sometimes be immoral. However, creating life in the context of a loving marriage is fundamentally different.”
“Children deserve to be brought into the world through love. It aligns with the natural order, and when approached this way, there are protective mechanisms for the child’s welfare in God’s providence,” she added.
Regarding IVF, Lila mentioned that if a couple can conceive naturally, typically, their chances are higher for a successful pregnancy. She pointed out that IVF has a success rate of about 50% for women under 35 who use their own eggs. However, this success can be influenced by several factors like age, the quality of the clinic, and overall lifestyle.
“The natural order prioritizes children’s safety and nutritional needs. That’s where IVF veers off course, yet the existence of a new life is not something to be disparaged,” Lila concluded.
Ally echoed her sentiments, stating, “While a baby is always considered a blessing, that doesn’t imply we endorse all the methods through which babies are conceived.”
