Lindsey Graham, 71, passes away: Honoring a political leader

Sens. Lindsey Graham Passes Away at 71

Republican Senator Lindsey Graham, who recently celebrated his 71st birthday on July 9, died unexpectedly overnight, as reported by his office. A statement mentioned that he passed away on Saturday night, July 11, after a brief illness. His family has requested privacy during this difficult time and appreciates everyone’s thoughts and prayers.

“He was always working and a true American patriot. Lindsey will be sorely missed!!!”

Graham was born in Central, South Carolina, on July 9, 1955, and earned his law degree from the University of South Carolina. He joined the U.S. Air Force in 1982 as a Judge Advocate and remained on active duty until 1989, continuing in the Guard until 1995, and then in the Reserve until his retirement in 2015 at the rank of colonel. He provided legal support to troops during the First Gulf War and served briefly in Iraq amidst the war on terror, being awarded a bronze star for his service.

After retiring from military service, Graham pivoted to politics, first being elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives in 1992. He moved on to represent South Carolina’s 3rd Congressional District in 1994 and eventually was elected to the U.S. Senate, taking over from Strom Thurmond, who had held the position since 1954.

Graham was known for his strong stances on foreign policy, particularly his support for Ukraine amid its conflict with Russia. It’s worth noting he had visited Ukraine shortly before his passing. He also endorsed military interventions in various Middle Eastern conflicts, including those involving Iran.

A longtime collaborator and friend of the late Senator John McCain of Arizona, Graham also backed McCain’s presidential campaign. After his own bid in 2016 for the presidency, he became a close ally of Donald Trump.

In a statement on Truth Social, Trump expressed his sorrow, saying, “Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest men and senators I have ever known, has passed away! He was always working and a true American patriot. Lindsey will be sorely missed!!!”

As a private individual, Graham was unmarried and did not have children.
