Graham Platner shares his thoughts on the latest sexual misconduct accusations directed at him.

New Allegations Surface Against Maine’s Democratic Senate Candidate

The campaign of Graham Platner, the Democratic candidate for the U.S. Senate in Maine, finds itself in troubled waters due to fresh allegations of sexual misconduct. The race against incumbent Susan Collins appears to be teetering on a precarious edge.

On Monday afternoon, Platner addressed the allegations in a two-minute video response. According to a report from Politico, a woman reportedly in a past relationship with him has accused him of “sexual assault.”

“Graham Platner should step aside. I am withdrawing my support,” the statement declared.

In the video, Platner dismissed the claims as “troubling, serious and false,” insisting that “any accusation of non-consensual conduct is categorically false.”

The progressive candidate highlighted the significance of the movement he leads, expressing pride in building the “largest volunteer base in the history of Maine politics,” primarily driven by the goal of defeating Collins.

Yet, while acknowledging the gravity of the accusations, Platner’s remarks led some viewers to wonder about the future of his campaign. He mentioned the need to reflect on “the best path forward for the state I love, the people I love, [and] the movement I belong to.” He didn’t provide a definitive answer regarding his campaign’s future but reiterated his commitment to the support he had garnered so far.

In his speech, Platner reflected on the recent primary, where an impressive 154,058 Mainers voted for change, seeking to transcend the political issues stemming from Washington.

“Everyone deserves to see that vision realized and see Susan Collins defeated. We’ll use every tool at our disposal to make that happen,” he asserted. He added, “As Maine moves forward, so will the country.”

While not officially a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, Platner’s progressive platform somewhat resonates with elements of the party’s more leftist wing. Despite skepticism from various notable figures regarding his viability, one prominent Democratic leader has consistently supported him amid his challenges.

Chuck Schumer, the Senate Minority Leader, has voiced his backing for Platner during a recent press conference, expressing confidence in his potential to challenge Collins. Schumer emphasized his preference for Platner over more traditional Democratic candidates.

After winning the primary election on June 9, Platner is set to face Collins in November, provided his campaign stays on course. However, hours after the video response, Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.), a former supporter, voiced his concerns on social media, stating, “I’ve been very clear that sexual assault and violence against women is a line that shouldn’t be crossed. These allegations are serious and credible. Graham Platner should step aside. I am withdrawing my support.”

Attempts to reach several key Democratic figures for comments went unanswered.
