Mr. Welker confronted Mr. Graham with the historical example of President Reagan cutting off military aid to Israel “in an attempt to influence Israeli policy.”
“President Biden is not the first president to use arms shipments to try to influence Israeli policy,” she told Graham. “As you know, former President Ronald Reagan repeatedly withheld arms to influence Israeli military action.”
Mr. Graham replied that a better historical example was the United States’ decision to drop atomic bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki.
“Why was America allowed to drop two nuclear bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki to end an existential war? Why was that allowed? I thought it was okay. ” asked Graham.
“To Israel: do whatever you have to do to survive as a Jewish state,” he added. “Whatever you have to do!”
