New Senator Appointed After Lindsey Graham’s Passing
In the wake of South Carolina Republican Senator Lindsey Graham’s unexpected death, the United States welcomes a new senator.
His sister, Darling Graham Nordon, is set to fulfill the remainder of his term, following an appointment by South Carolina’s Republican Governor, Henry McMaster.
“Dear Lindsey, I miss you more than words can express. But I’ll do this. I understand,” Nordon said during her acceptance at a press conference in Columbia.
She expressed gratitude to the governor for selecting her and shared: “I’m so honored. Lindsey has always been there for me, and I will always be there for him.”
The announcement regarding Graham’s passing was made early Sunday morning.
Nordon emphasized her dedication to continuing her brother’s work: “I am honored to be able to complete some of his important tasks. I’m committed to supporting the president and carrying on my brother’s efforts for the people of South Carolina and the United States.” She also noted, “I know Lindsey was thinking about his staff and colleagues, and I feel confident because of their support. I think this is what Lindsey would want, and I will honor him in this way.”
Reflecting on her brother’s promise to care for her, she shared, “Lindsay assured me that he would take care of me and that he would be there for me. He never let me down.” Graham became her legal guardian after the loss of their parents when they were young.
Preliminary medical reports indicate Graham died from an aortic dissection as a result of atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.
Graham, initially a vocal critic of President Donald Trump, became one of his allies after Trump won the presidency. President Trump paid tribute, declaring, “Senator Lindsey Graham, one of the greatest men and senators I have ever known, has passed away! He was always working and a true American patriot. Lindsey will be sorely missed!”
