Setback for Lindsey Vonn at Winter Olympics
Lindsey Vonn, the renowned American skier, faced a tragic end to her Olympic aspirations when she tore her anterior cruciate ligament during the women’s downhill competition in Italy on Sunday.
According to reports, Vonn lost control a mere 13 seconds into her run under bright skies in Cortina d’Ampezzo. She twisted in mid-air and crashed down onto the snow.
As medical teams rushed to assist her, Vonn’s cries could be heard amid the anxious crowd, and her younger sister watched on, looking visibly strained.
Eventually, Vonn was placed onto a stretcher and airlifted to a hospital for further treatment.
It was remarkable that she was even competing. Just nine days prior, she had suffered a significant setback at the Alpine Skiing World Cup in Crans-Montana, Switzerland, leading to her being hospitalized.
Doctors later confirmed that her left ACL was “completely torn.”
In spite of the severity of her injury, Vonn had expressed her determination to participate in the Olympics.
Although her journey has taken a devastating turn, America still found a reason to celebrate in that event.
Breezy Johnson clinched gold, marking her first Olympic medal, finishing just 0.04 seconds ahead of Germany’s Emma Eicher. Italy’s Sofia Goggia rounded out the podium with a bronze medal.
