Lindsey Vonn Undergoes Third Surgery Following Injury at 2026 Olympics
Olympic icon Lindsey Vonn announced on Wednesday that she has had a third surgery after a foot injury sustained during a fall at the 2026 Milan-Cortina Games.
In an Instagram update, Vonn described the surgery as a “success,” sharing a photo of herself recovering in a hospital bed with a metal frame on her leg.
“I had my third surgery today and it was a success. Today’s success has a completely different meaning than it did a few days ago,” she shared. “I’m making progress, and I know it’s going to be okay, albeit slowly.”
Vonn expressed her gratitude toward the medical staff, friends, and family for their support, and extended her congratulations to her teammates, acknowledging their inspiration during this challenging time.
Prominent athletes, including Naomi Osaka and Shaun White, have sent their well wishes as she embarks on her recovery journey.
The 41-year-old ski legend was already competing with a torn ACL when she suffered a serious injury during the women’s downhill event, which required her to be airlifted from the scene.
Following the accident, officials at the Italian hospital reported that Vonn underwent surgery to “stabilize a reported fracture in her left leg.” She later clarified that she had a “compound fracture of the tibia, which is currently stable but will require multiple surgeries for proper stabilization.”
Before the competition began, many had questioned how Vonn would perform despite her injury. She was determined to medal in her signature event; the initial rounds had gone well, but matters escalated quickly when she lost control just moments into her run.
Despite the challenges, Vonn has reflected positively on her decision to race, stating she has no regrets. “Yesterday didn’t end the way I wanted it to, but despite the intense physical pain it caused, I have no regrets,” she wrote. “I will never forget the incredible feeling I felt standing in the starting gate yesterday, knowing that I had a chance to win.”
She added, “Racing, like life, involves risks. We dream, we love, we leap. Sometimes we stumble, and sometimes our aspirations don’t materialize. But that’s what makes life beautiful; we keep trying.”
Vonn concluded with a simple yet profound sentiment: “I tried. I dreamed. I jumped.”
