Lionel Messi missing game prompts free tickets for future match

After Lionel Messi didn't travel to Houston, Dynamo offered fans who bought tickets for Sunday's game against Intermiami with make-up for their troubles.

The match against Messelle Inter Miami has been one of the hottest tickets in Major League Soccer since the Global Sports Icon joined the team in 2023, but the team was forced to make up for a game where strikers weren't on the pitch.

Dynamo announced in a statement Saturday that it will offer free tickets to anyone for Sunday night's match.

“The Houston Dynamo is excited to host Intermiami CF at Shell Energy Stadium on Sunday evening,” the club said. He said in a statement. “The recent shared player status report for the match didn't include forward Lionel Messi, but it was reported that he didn't make a trip to Houston. Unfortunately, we don't have control over who plays for the opponent.

“We look forward to hosting everyone tomorrow on what will be a great atmosphere and celebration of football for the city of Houston. To show our appreciation, fans attending tomorrow night's game can request free tickets for future Dynamo games this season. Additional details will be provided early next week.”

Even without Messi on the field, attendance at the Sunday night game at Shell Energy Stadium was announced as 20,810.

Sunday was the first time Messi skipped a competitive game in 2025 after playing both games in Miami's Consacuff Champions Cup along with his season opening match against New York City FC last weekend.

Last season, the Vancouver Whitecaps received 50% discount on all meals at the stadium when Messi didn't play in a Canadian city, and in 2023 the Chicago Fire provided credits to those who bought tickets to a game against Inter Miami, where Messi didn't play.

Messi's games are in high demand among soccer fans across the country and can often become part of the most expensive MLS tickets in the secondary market.

Tickets for Intermiami are against both the Big Apple's New York clubs. Both are priced at a considerable price.

Prices for September games at Yankee Stadium start at $132 at SeatGeek, while July games at Sports Illustrated Stadium against Red Bull start at $221.
