Lions team 2025: Farrell reveals 38-man roster with flexibility to include his son Owen

Andy Farrell has hinted that his son, Owen, could still join the UK & Irish Lions tour in Australia. He encouraged Henry Pollock to demonstrate his “sakky” side after Northampton’s standout performance, which made him an obvious selection.

Owen was notably absent from the 38-player squad announced, led by Finn Russell, including options like Finn Smith and Marcus Smith at fly-half. Pollock’s inclusion is noteworthy, considering he debuted for the Test team against Wales in March, representing a remarkable season for the 20-year-old at Northampton. Meanwhile, Marcus Smith’s versatility is beneficial, although he seems to be lower in England’s depth chart.

Other significant omissions from the team include former England captain Jamie George, Irish fly-half Sam Prendagast, and Jack Willis from Toulouse, all absent from a lineup featuring 12 players from Rainster. Farrell shared that the selection meeting with his assistant ran six hours longer than anticipated.

Originally, Farrell expected to name a stronger contingent of 40, but he intentionally allowed for “wiggle room” for players recovering from injuries—Owen included. With upcoming fixtures between the first and second Tests, it’s likely he might reclaim a spot, even as Owen grapples with his position at Racing 92. Reflections on the 2017 New Zealand tour, where Warren Gatland added emergency replacements, linger in this context.

“He was having discussions,” Andy noted about his father. “That kind of experience on his fourth tour is invaluable. Experienced leadership means grounding.”

“Owen is also working on regaining his fitness, just like others. There are 38 chosen, which might leave some opportunities open if the situation demands,” he added.

Pollock, who celebrated his 20th birthday in January, is the youngest on the tour and traditionally takes care of the Lions mascot. His selection was met with enthusiastic applause at the O2 event in front of about 2,000 people. The backrow talent has impressed with two tries in a brief Test rugby career and displays a level of confidence that Farrell wants him to maintain during the tour.

“I’ve heard great things about the young players coming in. He’s got confidence and a bit of cheekiness,” Farrell remarked. “But really, what do we expect? Shouldn’t they project confidence at this age—why wait until they are older?”

Farrell appreciated Pollock’s impactful play, highlighting the energy he brings to the field. George’s absence surprised many, especially as he has been recovering from being stripped of the England captaincy, providing leadership for a squad with many newcomers. Kaelan Doris’s recent shoulder injury further complicated decisions for Farrell, leading to George’s exclusion, with the player being informed ahead of the announcement.

“It’s tough to dash dreams, even if it’s necessary,” Farrell said. “For figures like Jamie and others, it’s about staying resilient; if they keep their health up, anything can still occur.”

Itoje expressed feeling “deeply honored and humbled” to be named captain after a call from Farrell. He acknowledged Pollock as “a young player eager to make an impact.”

“These tours are unpredictable, and while some players may carry a certain status, that can change quickly,” he concluded.
