Mother’s Innocence Claimed from Arizona Prison

An Australian mother, Lisa Marie Cunningham, currently imprisoned in Arizona, maintains her innocence while speaking from behind bars.

At 51, Lisa has received an eight-year sentence, confined to a small cell and allowed just an hour outside each day, amidst unsettling company—she shares the facility with some of the country’s most notorious female criminals.

Charged with first-degree murder in 2017, Lisa faces serious allegations surrounding the death of her seven-year-old stepdaughter, Sanaa, in Phoenix. An extensive investigation spanned ten months, culminating in charges against Lisa and 46-year-old Jermaine. Sanaa tragically died from a severe infection at Phoenix Children’s Hospital.

In a significant development earlier this year, prosecutors decided against seeking the death penalty. Recently, Lisa’s defense has started to surface. In an interview with media, she argued that Sanaa’s death wasn’t a murder, but rather a tragic medical event.

Lisa claimed her stepdaughter had early onset schizophrenia and was prescribed antipsychotic medications, which are generally not recommended for children under 13. “It’s perplexing… the narrative that suggests she was slowly killed is baffling,” Lisa shared in the interview.

Her daughter, Sierra, reminisced fondly about her mother, calling her not only a parent but also a best friend. “She was my rock… She always strived to be the best mother for us,” Sierra explained.

Reflecting on Sanaa’s struggles, Sierra noted alarming signs, like her sister’s unusual eating habits. Sanaa suffered from Pica, a disorder that drove her to consume non-food items, which was heartbreaking to witness.

Lisa recalled, “We had this vibrant family. Unfortunately, we were just unprepared for what was happening.” Eleven months prior to Sanaa’s passing, Lisa felt increasingly distressed about her stepdaughter, expressing fears for Sanaa’s safety and others’.

Lisa revealed that they sought professional help, resulting in a troubling diagnosis from a psychologist. “She told us it was serious and suspected schizophrenia, recommending antipsychotics,” Lisa said.

Despite this diagnosis, the psychiatrist involved is not facing any charges. Lisa was particularly concerned about this because she believed that Sanaa should never have been prescribed medication at such a young age. However, she recalled feeling unheard when contacting the psychiatrist just before Sanaa’s emergency. By then, Sanaa’s condition had deteriorated significantly.

After a series of devastating events and decisions made in emergency care, Lisa recounted the harrowing moment when medical staff informed her that they couldn’t save Sanaa. “I just stood there, completely lost and helpless,” she admitted.

The autopsy later uncovered a shocking number of scars and injuries on Sanaa’s body, which Lisa defended by stating that Sanaa had a history of self-harm—an aspect that complicates the narrative of neglect and abuse put forth by prosecutors. They allege that Sanaa was mistreated by her parents, citing accusations of confinement and restraint—claims Lisa firmly disputes.

Lisa shared messages exchanged with Jermaine the night before Sanaa’s death, suggesting they were fatigued, not abusive. “You’ll form your own opinion looking from the outside in,” she noted regarding their conversations.

Following Sanaa’s death, authorities judged Lisa to be a significant risk to her other children, which left her feeling as though her entire world had crumbled.

A child safety worker who observed Lisa insisted on her innocence, believing that no murder had occurred. Lisa’s attorney claimed that both the medical system and others failed to protect Sanaa adequately, denying her a fighting chance.

Lisa’s aunt expressed fear for her family, highlighting the profound losses they endured.

It’s worth mentioning that there were prior complaints regarding Sanaa’s welfare before her untimely death. A report was made about alleged neglect, but investigations closed without finding any evidence of abuse. Media outreach for further commentary from legal authorities about Lisa’s case has not been fruitful, as both declined to participate in interviews.

As the trial approaches, prosecutors are set to present their case in the following weeks, casting a shadow over a family already strained by tragedy.
