LIV Golf CEO Provides Update on Funding and Future Plans

Scott O’Neill, the CEO of LIV Golf, confirmed recent reports indicating that the Saudi Public Investment Fund will stop financing the golf league after this season. This news, while surprising to some, comes as O’Neill assured that there are still “plans” in the works, which might catch people off guard.

In an interview with TNT Sports, he mentioned, “You’re funded through the season, and then you hustle to create a sustainable business model. It’s not different from any private equity venture ever.” This statement was made as the tour gears up for its next event in Mexico City.

Despite the looming uncertainty, O’Neill is taking a proactive approach. “I’m really excited about how we’ll move forward. I’ve mentioned some structural changes, and those are coming soon. Just ask the roughly 50 people I met at Augusta—I’ve got a plan,” he remarked.

He also hinted at potential fundraising needs, saying, “Do I need to raise money? Maybe. It’s business. But if our revenue continues to grow, we could be looking at a very successful venture for years to come.” Reports from sources indicate that the Saudis will cease their funding after the 2026 season, a story initially brought to light by the Financial Times.

In a memo sent to LIV employees, O’Neill reassured them that the current season would run “as planned, without disruption, and at full throttle.”

He commented on the challenges of running a startup, saying, “The pressures of these moments can often shape a business. We joined this venture to disrupt the status quo. We’ve faced difficulties before, and each time we’ve shown persistence. Now, we’re focused on delivering an entertaining sports experience.”

O’Neill expressed his enthusiasm for their mission, stating, “The noise you hear is just the sound of progress. Embrace it. As pioneers, the journey might be rocky, but the destination is worthwhile. Go out there and demonstrate why LIV Golf is the future.” He added a lighthearted note with “Long live golf.”

Since its inception in 2022, LIV has already seen two major winners, including Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau, both of whom have since made their way back to the PGA Tour.

This season, LIV Golf has also transitioned from a 54-hole to a 72-hole format, which seems to appeal to players who have previously left the PGA.
