Democratic Party Withdraws Support from Graham Plattner Campaign Amid New Allegations
The situation for Maine Democratic Senate candidate Graham Plattner has escalated following serious allegations from his ex-girlfriend, who accused him of rape in 2021. This incident adds to other controversies surrounding him, including claims of Nazi tattoos and prior accusations of physical abuse. Calls for his withdrawal from the race have begun to emerge, with notable political figures like Bernie Sanders advising him to reconsider his campaign.
On Tuesday, a far-left podcaster, Cenk Uyghur, criticized mainstream media for what he termed a “political assassination” of Plattner. The allegations were brought to light by Jenny Racicot, who dated Plattner, claiming he forced her to have sex without her consent while intoxicated.
In response, Plattner denied these allegations in a video statement, labeling them as “troubling, serious, and false.” He insisted that any claims of non-consensual actions against him are completely untrue and mentioned that his campaign is currently reassessing its direction based on what he describes as inaccuracies in the reporting.
The Downfall of Graham Plattner’s Campaign
These claims signify yet another setback for Plattner, whose campaign has faced numerous challenges due to accusations from past partners and scrutiny of his history. Despite his denials, significant political backlash has prompted several Democrats to revoke their support, urging him to exit the race.
Plattner has campaigned as an anti-establishment progressive, opposing corporate political action committees and U.S. aid to Israel. Uyghur has defended Plattner amidst the growing controversy, cautioning Democrats against replacing him with a candidate who supports more mainstream agendas.
He warned that if Democrats attempt to offer two candidates aligned with corporate interests and pro-Israel stances, it could lead to significant discontent among voters. Uyghur emphasized a desire for candidates who oppose corporate policies more vigorously and challenge established norms.
Media Scrutiny and Further Allegations
Furthermore, Uyghur has posited that anyone supporting Plattner might also endure character attacks. He expressed concern over a future media focus on anti-Israel candidates, mentioning that critics of Plattner could be motivated by their connections to Israel. He has previously stated that Democratic leaders orchestrated attacks against Plattner due to his controversial views.
The allegations first gained traction after a feature in the New York Times spotlighted Racicot and other women who recounted their experiences with Plattner. While some women provided positive testimonies about him, Racicot’s statements have cast a long shadow over his campaign.
Lindsay Fifield, one of the women interviewed by the Times, highlighted Plattner’s tattoo of the Nazi symbol “Totenkopf.” She noted that he had referred to it as “my Totenkopf,” raising further questions about his background. Following these revelations, many Democrats, including prominent figures like California Representative Ro Khanna and Michigan’s Rashida Tlaib, have distanced themselves from him.
While Sanders has not formally withdrawn his endorsement, he mentioned he advised Plattner to “stand down.” Currently, Plattner has yet to remove himself from the race but indicated in his video message that the campaign would be taking some time to review its options moving forward.
