Live Aid at 40: What have the legendary performers been up to since the memorable concert?

Live Aid, a monumental event aimed at raising funds and awareness for hunger relief in Ethiopia, happened over 40 years ago, on July 13, 1985. It took place at two main venues: Wembley Stadium in London and JFK Stadium in Philadelphia. This concert was broadcast to around 1.9 billion people across 150 countries, marking it as one of the biggest televised events ever.

The lineup in Philadelphia boasted stars like Madonna, Tina Turner, and Mick Jagger, while the London stage was graced by legends such as Elton John and Queen. Phil Collins made a notable appearance at both locations during this iconic concert.

Madonna shared her struggles balancing motherhood and her career, saying, “I’m struggling.” She continues to be a prolific artist, recognized as the best-selling female recording artist, having made over $1 billion from live performances.

Queen

Queen delivered a legendary 20-minute performance at Wembley, led by frontman Freddie Mercury, who tragically passed away in 1991. The band’s bassist, John Deacon, stepped back from music after Mercury’s death, whereas lead guitarist Brian May and drummer Roger Taylor continue to create music today.

Tina Turner

Another powerhouse performer at Live Aid, Tina Turner, famously sang alongside Mick Jagger. Sadly, she too passed away in May 2023.

Mick Jagger

Jagger not only collaborated with Turner but also performed solo hits, remaining active at 81. He faced some challenges with the Rolling Stones’ tour, but indications suggest they might still hit the road in 2026.

Elton John

Elton John also took to the stage in 1985 and, at 78, is still recording music, recently releasing an album in collaboration with Brandi Carlile.

Bob Dylan

Bob Dylan’s performance included an interesting moment when he broke a guitar string on stage, needing help from Rolling Stones’ members to finish. He is still active in music at the age of 84.

David Bowie

David Bowie performed “Heroes” during the concert. He passed away from liver cancer in 2016, just days after his 69th birthday.

Phil Collins

Collins, who also performed at both venues, has had some health challenges. Despite considering new music earlier this year, he expressed a lack of hunger for it, although he did participate in Genesis’s farewell tour in 2022.

George Michael

George Michael sang “Don’t Let the Sun Go Down on Me” at Live Aid alongside Elton John. He had his share of ups and downs, passing away in 2016 due to heart failure.

Tom Petty

Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers played “American Girl” at the event. Petty, who died in 2017 from an accidental overdose, left a rich legacy in music.
