How the reptile got there remains a mystery, so Rockland County police fished a live alligator out of a small stream.
The Haverstraw Police Department announced in a Facebook post that a “juvenile” alligator was found Thursday in Minisongo Creek, which immediately caused confusion from some commenters.
“So many questions lol,” one person said.
“People should stop keeping these as pets,” said one person, who speculated that the animal was a pet that someone had released into the local frigid waterways.

“Thanks to their quick thinking and professionalism, we were able to safely transport this juvenile alligator to the Hudson Valley Humane Society,” the post said. “This crocodile is currently being warmed up from cold water.”
The crocodile was rescued just before noon Thursday, after which police released it to Animal Welfare Society staff for care.

The alligator was confirmed to be male by a herpetologist at the Bronx Zoo and is in good health. At this time, it is still unclear how the alligator, which is not native to upstate New York, got into the stream.
