The league has already seen some intense trades happen early in the 2024 offseason, and things are only going to get more chaotic when NBA free agency gets underway on Sunday, June 30 at 6pm ET.
While deals won’t be officially announced until July 6, teams are allowed to negotiate with free agents at the start of the moratorium. This isn’t the strongest free agent class, but there seem to be enough desperate teams at the moment that could facilitate a big move.
Paul George seems like the biggest star to move teams, a scenario that got a boost Saturday afternoon when George opted out of his contract with the Los Angeles Clippers. Adrian WojnarowskiGeorge is expected to test the open market and, according to Wojnarowski, is scheduled to meet with “teams with cap space and the Clippers” starting Sunday evening. Philadelphia 76ers The Warriors are rumored to be actively pursuing George on the open market, and many other teams are likely to be interested.
Isaiah Hartenstein is another big name to watch in free agency. The 26-year-old center is New York Knicks There, he offered elite interior defense, efficient scoring and a bit of playmaking. The Knicks would like to keep him, but their salary is high after signing OG Anunoby to a $212 million contract extension and completing the Mikal Bridges trade. Hartenstein has a wide market, with the Oklahoma City Thunder frequently mentioned as a potential suitor.
Several future Hall of Famers are nearing the end of their careers and are unrestricted free agents. DeMar DeRozan turns 35 next month and could be leaving the Chicago Bulls after three great seasons with the team. James Harden could also sign a new contract with the Los Angeles Clippers or another team just before his 35th birthday. Klay Thompson is expected to leave the Chicago Bulls. Golden State Warriors This is the first time in his career that the 34-year-old has achieved this feat.
Other notable free agents include Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, Tobias Harris, Jonas Valanciunas, Buddy Hield, Kelly Oubre, Tyus Jones and Isaiah Joe.
