Liz Cheney joins Rep Allred for interview: 'You can’t trust Ted Cruz'

Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyo.) sat down with Rep. Collin Allred (D-Texas) for a sit-down interview in which she criticized her Texas Senate opponent, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas), for not being trustworthy.

In their first joint interview since formally endorsing Allred, Cheney discussed finding common ground with the Democratic candidate and criticized the Republican incumbent.

'You can't trust Ted Cruz': Cheney said “He'll say anything to serve his political purposes, but I've worked with Colin, and we've been on opposite sides of the aisle and on different issues, but at the end of the day, I know he has the interests of the people of Texas first and foremost,” he said in an interview Monday night, according to ABC News affiliate WFAA.

Cheney, a former No. 3 leader of the House Republican Conference, blasted the two-term Republican senator.

“[He] “This completely unconstitutional scheme would invalidate the electoral votes and nullify the votes of millions of Americans,” Cheney said, referring to the fake electoral college plot following the 2020 presidential election.

Speaking at the Texas Tribune Festival in Austin earlier this month, Cheney said she supported Allred, praising the House Democrat as someone who works “in good faith.”

Allred said he was “honored” to receive Cheney's endorsement, adding that he wanted “principled conservatives in this state to know that I want them to join this campaign and that they are welcome in our coalition.”

“And here in Texas, as Liz said, we have a pretty stark choice, and it's a choice between a senator who only thought about himself, who put himself and his political interests, his party interests, above the Constitution, who did something very dangerous that almost overturned a U.S. presidential election, and someone who is going to put us first,” Allred said in an interview.

Texas Senate polls show the race is close, but Cruz still has the lead.

The latest Emerson College/The Hill poll, released this week, put Allred four points behind Cruz. A University of Houston/Texas Southern University (UH/TSU) poll released late last month had Cruz just two points behind. Democrat

University of Texas/Texas Politics Project (UT) investigation Last week's poll also had Allred trailing Cruz by 8 points, but pollsters say the Democratic House candidate has been closing the gap since being 16 points behind in the previous poll. December.

The Cruz campaign fired back at Cheney, saying Cruz's “fights” with “top” Republicans are the reason “no one will take her seriously no matter which candidate she endorses.”

“Texas voters care about the issues, and that's why Senator Cruz has the support of District Attorney Kim Ogg, county sheriffs, local elected officials and others who genuinely care about saving Texas – not cheap political entertainment,” a Cruz campaign spokesperson said in a statement to The Hill.

“She won the overwhelming support of Wyoming voters two years ago, and in 50 days, Collin Allred will win the support of Texas voters,” the spokesman added. “She's an underdog, and he'll soon be an underdog, but, man, you have to be an underdog to know what an underdog is.”

Cheney, a vocal critic of former President Trump, said earlier this month that she would vote for Vice President Harris in the 2024 presidential election.
