‘Local Folks Are Trying to Figure That Out’ — Trump Wants to ‘Politicize’ Fire

In an interview aired on CNN's “AC360” broadcast Wednesday, California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) said local officials were trying to get a handle on the water situation, and President-elect Donald Trump said the disaster “I want to politicize it,'' he said, adding, “I have a lot on my mind, and I know what I want to say.'' I don't. “

Host Anderson Cooper asked, “What's the water situation like?” Apparently, the Palisades ran out of water last night…I was talking to a firefighter on this block who said they left because there was no water at the hydrants here. ”

Mr. Newsom responded: “Locals are still trying to figure it out. If there's a system that's not similar to what we've seen in other unusually large fires, whether it's power in the pipes or just a complete breakdown of the system. Overwhelming, these hydrants are common for two or three fires. Probably something of this magnitude in one fire. But again, that's up to local authorities. It will be done.”

Newsom also said water is being brought in from other areas and there are aerial assets as well.

Cooper then asked Newsom about the criticism he has received from President-elect Trump, and Newsom said:[O]I can't even reply. It's – people are literally running away, people are losing their lives, children are losing their schools, families are being torn apart, churches are being burned down. And this guy wanted to politicize it. There are a lot of things I think about, but I understand what you're trying to say. I don't. I stood next to the President of the United States today, and I was proud to be with Joe Biden, and he had the support of everyone in this community. And he didn't play politics or try to divide us. ”
