Residents of the suburban Chicago town made their anger known Saturday against Democratic Mayor Tiffany Haynard.
Dozens of people from 17 villages in Thornton Township gathered to protest Haynard’s refusal to disclose details about town finances, infrastructure and the decline in town services.

Ms. Avent serves as chair of the Dolton City People’s Council Advisory Committee. The group, which she founded earlier this year, targeted Haynard over the mayor’s role in spending taxpayer money on luxury trips and allegedly pushing the village into bankruptcy.

Other speakers at the gathering also pointed to a marked decline in public services. One woman, Tracy Morris, pointed out that her street is riddled with potholes because regular repairs are not done.
“This is definitely a time for change,” Morris said. “Officials need to be open and honest because something is going on.”
He also added that “the infrastructure is not in place.”

Haynard’s actions have drawn national attention for what many consider an almost comedic level of corruption at the expense of a small Illinois town with a median annual income of $24,000. .
