London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan expressed in a Wednesday interview that the trade conflict involving the United States and various nations is “detrimental for all of us.”
In a discussion on MSNBC’s “Morning Joe,” Khan mentioned his aspiration for the UK to secure a deal that would lessen the effects of President Trump’s tariffs, while cautioning against the broader global ramifications of protectionist policies.
“We hope that Prime Minister Starmer and President Trump will appreciate this unique relationship, but we recognize that it’s not just about the UK,” Khan stated during his conversation with MSNBC’s Joe Scarborough.
“The trade dispute between China and the US is harmful to everyone,” Khan elaborated. “I believe the trade conflict between the US and the EU is harmful to all of us. I think protectionism, nationalism, and unilateralism are detrimental to everyone.”
“When America engages with the world, I believe it benefits the entire globe,” he concluded.
Khan, who has previously had disagreements with the president, emphasized the importance of fostering strong relations with the US, calling both nations “best friends.”
“It is crucial for our prime minister, through the president, to work diligently to maintain a close connection with America since we are best friends,” he said when asked about his “positive relationship” with Trump, given their prior “tough exchanges.”
“We admire America. We appreciate American culture. We value American history. We enjoy American politics. We love Hamilton,” Khan expressed.
“We need America, and we hope America needs us as our allies do,” he added.
The UK has been affected by Trump’s 10% baseline tariff, in addition to a 25% import levy on aluminum, steel, and automotive components.
Khan was queried about the extent to which tariffs impact London.
“Tariffs lead to increased prices. They cause inflation. They result in higher interest rates. They lead to protectionist measures. I think this is detrimental for everyone,” he stated.
