In a recent decision, the Long Island suburb approved an 87% property tax increase for Wolop’s homeowners. Officials have described this substantial hike as necessary for the ongoing management and maintenance of the area.
At a village board meeting, leaders indicated that the tax issues stem from how the county has assessed properties over the years, yet they did not provide further details or respond to inquiries from the media.
The Nassau County assessor stated that the village government had been improperly charging commercial properties.
Joseph Adamo clarified that Nassau County is not involved in collecting or managing the village’s budget or taxes. This raises questions about where the financial responsibility truly lies.
Some residents expressed frustration, noting that part of the tax increase might cover more than $500,000 in ongoing legal expenses related to a dispute with Chabad, a Jewish organization that the village has accused of discrimination.
One resident voiced their thoughts, saying, “If they actually fix the boardwalk or tend to the roads that have been a mess since Hurricane Sandy, then sure, I wouldn’t mind paying higher taxes. It just doesn’t feel right. The mayors and council members should be responsible for the lawsuit costs out of their own pockets.”
Chabad of the Beaches acquired the former Capital One Bank location in November 2021 for $950,000 to provide religious services and programming to the broader Jewish community in Atlantic Beach.
As controversy grew, village officials hurried to block a proposed plan after learning about it. The conflict primarily revolves around a court decision regarding a community center intended for lifeguard operations.
Fast Liberty, the legal group representing Chabad, is pushing back against the village government. They stated, “It’s time for village officials to stop targeting Chabad and allow the community to worship peacefully.”
Residents are preparing to attend the next council meeting to demand accountability and further discussion on these pressing issues.
