Mayor of Mackinac Island Marks 50th Anniversary in Office

Margaret Dowd has reached a significant milestone in her political career. On Tuesday, she was re-elected as the mayor of Mackinac Island, a well-known tourist spot in Michigan, famous for its stunning views and, of course, its fudge.

This two-square-mile island resides in Lake Huron and is unique for being entirely car-free; only horses, bicycles, and pedestrians are allowed on its 13.2-mile roads. It’s about a four-hour drive followed by a 20-minute ferry ride from Detroit. Every year, more than a million visitors flock to Mackinac, whereas only around 600 people live there year-round, including Dowd.

In 1975, Dowd jumped into her family’s business by taking over the Windermere Hotel. That very same year, she was elected mayor for the first time. Because the city charter mandates annual elections for mayors, Dowd has campaigned and won each year since her initial win. She ran unopposed this time around.

Among those celebrating her accomplishment was David Jurcak, president of the Grand Hotel, who praised her dedication to the island’s future and its businesses. He remarked on how her steadfast leadership has shaped Mackinac Island, allowing it to flourish.

In her 52nd year in office, Dowd remains active in local governance while also managing her hotel. She took part in a recent ribbon-cutting ceremony that signaled the start of the tourism season on May 1.

One of Dowd’s proudest accomplishments has been maintaining the horse-drawn carriage culture that reflects the island’s Victorian heritage. “I’ve always said that we can’t afford to lose the feel of Mackinac,” she stated, emphasizing the importance of this unique aspect of the island.

Although Dowd has served longer than any other current U.S. mayor, she still has a way to go to break the all-time record. Hilmar Moore, who served as mayor of Richmond, Texas, held his position for an astounding 63 years before passing away in 2012.

As she approaches her 83rd birthday, Dowd has hinted that retirement is not on her immediate agenda. “When the time is right, I will step away, but there are still some projects I want to see through,” she reflected.
