During a congressional testimony today, Elizabeth Carter, who identifies as a “lifelong Democrat,” expressed her shame regarding her party’s approach to immigration following the tragic death of her son, William Micah Carter. He was killed in a car accident involving a truck driver, who is an undocumented immigrant and had received a license in California.
Carter’s son and his newlywed wife, Jennifer Lower, along with their cat, “Bert,” died when their vehicle collided with a big rig driven by an undocumented immigrant named Rajinder Kumar in late November.
At the time of the accident, the couple was returning from their wedding reception in the hometown of Carter’s late daughter-in-law in Oregon. “Sixteen days after their marriage, Billy, Jenny, and the cat Bert were lost. They became victims of this Russian roulette that our government is forcing them to play,” Carter testified.
While responding to questions from Rep. Brad Knott, a Republican from North Carolina, Carter criticized the lack of immigration enforcement from Democrats: “We’ve allowed 10 million people to enter under Biden. What different suggestions are there on how to process them if it’s not the same way they came in, in large numbers, leaving?”
She elaborated, “As a lifelong Democrat, I truly feel ashamed of my party’s actions.”
Knott replied, “They don’t care,” and further questioned, “Is enforcing our laws to protect just one American family worth it?”
“One party believes that if mass deportation is necessary to resolve the issues they’ve created, then that’s what must happen. If it means protecting one family from enduring suffering like yours, then I think that’s a goal worth pursuing,” he stated.
In agreement, Carter responded, “Absolutely.”
Knott pointed to the Democratic members present, saying, “They continue to defend it. Not one of them will say that if you’re here illegally, you should leave.”
The issue of licensed undocumented immigrant drivers in the U.S. has become increasingly problematic, especially in light of several fatal accidents involving them.
Recently, ICE launched a new hotline for citizens to report suspected fraud related to commercial driver’s licenses as part of an intensified crackdown on unqualified truck drivers during the Trump administration.
In announcing this hotline, Department of Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin stated, “Too many American lives have been lost or changed forever due to illegal aliens who shouldn’t be on our roads having been granted commercial driver’s licenses.”
“ICE and our federal partners, including the Department of Transportation, will be taking stringent action against CDL fraud so that we don’t lose another American life to an irresponsible undocumented driver behind a semi-truck,” he added.
