Mayors in Los Angeles Urge End to Federal Immigration Actions

On Wednesday, a coalition of mayors from the Los Angeles area came together to voice their concerns about federal immigration actions they claim are instilling fear in their communities. Over 30 mayors stood alongside Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass at a press conference to criticize the decision to deploy National Guard troops and Marines into the city.

Bass accused the White House of intentionally provoking unrest. She implied that the federal government’s actions were contributing to escalating tensions in Los Angeles. In response, President Trump took to social media, suggesting that without military presence, the city would be facing unprecedented crime.

“If LA hadn’t sent the troops, we’d be looking at a crime scene like we haven’t seen in years,” Trump stated, further raising concerns about the current situation under Governor Gavin Newsom.

Marine Corps veteran Arturo Flores, who serves as Mayor of Huntington Park, expressed deep concern over the militarization of immigration enforcement. He labeled the deployment of Marines on domestic soil as a troubling escalation that doesn’t belong in their neighborhoods.

“As mayors, we stand united against tactics that rely on fear, which ultimately undermine public trust,” he remarked.

Major General Scott Sherman noted that approximately 2,000 National Guard members had already been deployed, with another 2,000 and about 700 Marines on the way.

In the meantime, downtown Los Angeles remains under a curfew. Since Saturday, local police reported arresting around 400 individuals, mainly for serious offenses such as assaulting an officer or possessing weapons. Minor injuries were reported for nine police officers involved in the incidents.

The future of protests around the nation is uncertain, with Sherman indicating concern over the ongoing situation in Los Angeles and beyond.
