Los Angeles has gained another title, as it now ranks as the most mosquito-infested city in the United States.
This surge can be attributed to unusually high temperatures and the looming El Niño conditions, creating an ideal environment for mosquitoes to breed in Southern California.
Residents are expressing their frustration after suffering a summer filled with these pesky insects, which are invading backyards and ruining outdoor meals.
One TikTok user shared, “I’ve been here my whole life and the amount of mosquitoes I’ve seen this summer has been insane.” Her post resonated with many, racking up over 21,000 likes. She mentioned that stepping into her backyard feels impossible due to the swarms. “You can’t even sit in your car with the windows down. They’re everywhere,” she relayed.
Truman Hedding from El Segundo reported that he spends his evenings on the hunt for mosquitoes, often using an electric racquet. He expressed his concern: “Our kids are covered with bites all over. It’s truly a nightmare. It’s frustrating because we chose to live in a lovely town like El Segundo, and now we’re kept up all night battling mosquitoes.”
This year, Los Angeles County has seen more than 180 confirmed cases of West Nile virus, a figure that reflects the highest number in nearly ten years, according to the local health department.
The native ‘Culex’ mosquitoes transmit West Nile virus from wild birds to humans. In Orange County, officials have reported pulling 850 traps filled with mosquitoes that tested positive for the virus.
Things are compounded by invasive ‘Aedes’ species, often dubbed “ankle-biters,” which are known for targeting human legs and delivering multiple bites at once.
