Mayor Bass Implements Curfew in Downtown Los Angeles
On Tuesday, Mayor Karen Bass announced a curfew for downtown Los Angeles in an effort to “stop vandalism and looting.” This local emergency measures will last from 8 p.m. Tuesday until 6 a.m. Wednesday.
Bass remarked, “We’ve reached a tipping point,” referencing the recent looting of 23 businesses.
The curfew will affect a one-square-mile area in downtown, where protests have been ongoing since Friday. For context, the city itself spans about 500 square miles.
Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell clarified that the curfew doesn’t apply to local residents, the homeless, qualified media members, or public safety officials. He emphasized that “illegal and dangerous behavior” had increased significantly since Saturday.
McDonnell further stated, “The curfew is a necessary measure to protect properties that have been threatened over several consecutive days.”
Earlier that day, National Guard personnel were deployed to safeguard immigration agents following recent arrests in Los Angeles. Photos from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) showed troops providing security around these officers.
ICE noted that the military’s role includes ensuring safety at federal facilities and protecting officers involved in daily enforcement, a move that aligns with President Donald Trump’s administration goals regarding immigration policies. The agency also mentioned that security guards are assisting with transportation and have the authority to temporarily detain individuals who threaten officers, though law enforcement will handle arrests.
