Rams Appoint Nate Schielhaas as Offensive Coordinator

The Los Angeles Rams have officially announced that Nate Schielhaas will take on the role of offensive coordinator.

The pressing question now is whether the Rams will need to secure a replacement swiftly for Schielhaas, who has already garnered attention as a potential future head coach in the NFL.

At just 35, Schielhaas has been with the Rams for two years as their passing game coordinator and has now been promoted to this prestigious position, working closely with head coach Sean McVay.

This is a significant step, particularly considering McVay’s history of developing coaches who go on to excel in head coaching roles, particularly in offensive positions.

Coaching Tree and Future Prospects

McVay’s coaching lineage features notable figures like Zac Taylor (Bengals), Matt LaFleur (Packers), and Kevin O’Connell (Vikings), among others. Furthermore, former Rams defensive coordinator Brandon Staley is leading the Chargers as their head coach now.

This year, Schielhaas has risen through the ranks, stepping in to replace Mike LaFleur and becoming a sought-after candidate himself. He even participated in press conferences for head coaching positions with teams like the Ravens and Browns during this hiring cycle. Given his past success as an offensive coordinator, it feels inevitable that he’ll land a larger opportunity soon.

Before joining the Rams, Schielhaas was the offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at Iowa State.

McVay remains at the helm of the Rams’ offense. The team is currently leading the league in scoring with an impressive average of 30.5 points per game. In addition to Schielhaas, former Cardinals head coach Kliff Kingsbury has been added as an offensive assistant. Kingsbury previously served as the offensive coordinator for the Commanders.

With quarterback Matthew Stafford recommitting to the team for at least one more season, the Rams are poised for another strong offensive performance. Stafford had an exceptional last season, amassing 4,707 passing yards and 46 touchdowns, also winning his first MVP accolade.

The Rams have a solid supporting cast, including wide receivers Puka Nacua and Davante Adams, running back Kyren Williams, and a tight end group that has become crucial within their effective personnel strategy.

Schielhaas hails from Ames, Iowa, and played quarterback at the University of Illinois from 2009 to 2013. He began his coaching career in 2015 and joined Iowa State in 2018, where he worked his way up from running backs coach to offensive coordinator by 2023.
