Unexpected Guest at Christmas Parade

It was a memorable moment for the Christmas celebrations.

A black bear, appearing to be unharmed, unexpectedly entered the route of a Christmas parade in Tennessee, drawing the attention of thousands of spectators, as captured in surprising footage and local accounts.

The bear made its entrance during Gatlinburg’s 50th annual Christmas parade, creating quite a stir among the crowd. People quickly pulled out their phones to record the bear, which, amusingly, seemed adorned with holiday lights, using a road as its stage.

The crowd, relatively quiet except for the bear’s presence, reacted with excitement, as one observer noted the bear moving towards a nearby parking lot.

“I was just waiting for the Christmas parade, and then this bear showed up!!!” exclaimed one delighted participant on social media.

However, not everyone was thrilled with the sight of “Santa Claus” bear.

The Tennessee Department of Wildlife Resources expressed concerns, noting that the bear appeared to be accustomed to human interaction, which could pose risks. If it starts associating people with food, the department might have to intervene.

“The bear is likely to have an encounter with humans eventually, so it’s crucial to ensure it maintains its wild instincts. We want to avoid situations where it grows too comfortable around people,” agency representative Matt Cameron stated. He added that typically, bears tend to shy away from humans rather than seek their attention, unlike some pets.

Later, the bear was spotted rummaging through garbage, leading to city officials highlighting their plans to invest in bear-proof trash bins and encouraging residents to use them properly to reduce bear encounters.

Gatlinburg is situated as the gateway to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, which is home to around 1,500 bears, making these precautions all the more relevant.
